Abstract

1,129,559. Making boxes. E. M. MELAHN. 1 Aug., 1966 [24 Aug., 1965], No. 34472/66. Heading B5D. Apparatus for erecting cartons from flattened tubular blanks comprises a cage 25 having an abutment wall 131 and a pair of opposed side walls 130, 133 turnable about parallel spaced axes, means for delivering a carton blank laterally into the cage between said side walls while expanding it to a fully open position, actuating means for moving said side walls to turn the panels of the blank about their fold lines to first overfold the blank and then reopen it, and means for delivering the tubular member in fully open condition from the cage. The flat tubular blanks in the magazine 22 are urged forwards by a pusher 66 actuated by a weight 63. The leading blank is drawn into the cage 25 by suction grippers which move through the rear wall 131 of the cage, the opening of the tubular blank being initiated by abutment members 91. The opposing walls 130, 133 of the cage are spring biased to their open position and when the blank is engaged therein in its open position, the said opposing walls are caused to collapse, Fig. 6, by a roller 143, to overfold the blank. The cage then returns to its open position to reopen the blank. The blank is then moved upwardly out of the cage by elevator means moving through the cage, on to one of a series of mandrels 27 on a rotating head 28 which indexes the tubular cartons to various stations for forming the top and bottom. A guide ra 1 69, Fig. 5, may be fitted to the magazine to suit it to smaller cartons. Spring- loaded fingers 147, 156 are fitted to the side walls of the cage to maintain the tubular carton therein. The various operations of the machine are performed through linkages controlled by a cam 44.
