1,129,475. Phthalic anhydride. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Oct., 1965 [10 Nov., 1964], No. 45752/64. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] o-Xylene is oxidized to phthalic anhydride in the presence of a fluidized bed of catalyst comprising an oxide of vanadium in admixture with boric anhydride and alkali metal oxide/ sulphur trioxide compounds in which the overall molecular ratio of S03 to alkali metal oxide is in the range 1À2 to 2À3, the mixture being distributed on a particulate silica, support. An example describes the oxidation at 350‹ C. and maleic anhydride, CO and CO 2 are the usual by-products.
