Abstract

1,128,754. Heat-shrinkable films. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 21 March, 1966 [24 March, 1965], No. 12337/66. Heading B5B. A heat-shrinkable film is made by extruding at a temperature above its crystalline m.p. an interpolymer comprising ethylene and from 1-45% by wt., based on the interpolymer, of at least one monovinylidene monomer having 3-10 C atoms, a relative crystallinity not greater than 50% measured by X-ray diffraction and a crystalline m.p. of 85-112 C., through an annular die to form a seamless tubing, inflating said tubing with a gas to at least three times the diameter of the die, cooling and collapsing the bubble thus formed to a layflat tubing. The vinyl monomer may be a vinyl ester of a C 1-8 alkanoic acid, a C 1-8 alkyl ester of an [alpha],#-ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, a free [alpha],# - ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, or an [alpha],#-ethylenically unsaturated nitrile. Specified interpolymers contain as monomer : methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate, acrylonitrile or isobutyl acrylate/acrylic acid. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 992,897.
