Abstract

1,128,693. Slack adjuster for brake rigging. SVENSKA A.B. BROMSREGULATOR. 23 March, 1967, No. 13606/67. Heading F2E. In an automatic slack adjuster for railway vehicle brake riggings, of the kind comprising a screw-threaded spindle extending through one or more nuts (not shown), the relative axial positions of which are variable in known manner for effecting automatic slack adjustment, the end of the spindle which is normally connected non-rotatably to the brake rigging is provided with a detent device in accordance with either Fig. 3 or Fig. 5, depending upon whether the slack adjuster transmits tension or compression forces, respectively, the device comprising two interengaging toothed members capable of overriding each other only when the brake is released and when sufficient manual force is applied. In the Fig. 3 form, the detent device comprises a sleeve 15, which is coupled to the brake rigging by integral pins 16, 17, the sleeve being slidable on a plain end portion of the screw-threaded spindle 2 and carrying an extension sleeve 18 having an inwardly directed flange 19. A compression spring assembly 20 is arranged between the flange 19 and an outwardly directed flange 8 on the spindle 2 to normally maintain shoulder 21, provided by the flange 8, in contact with the sleeve 15. In this position, relative rotation of the sleeve 15 and spindle 2 is prevented by interengaging teeth on the lefthand face of the flange 19 and on a part 10 which is secured on a threaded end portion of the spindle 2 of reduced diameter by a nut 13. When sufficient manual force is applied to the nut 13, however, the spindle 2 can be rotated, since the teeth on flange 19 and part 10 can then override each other by camming action, compressing the spring assembly 20. In the Fig. 5 form, a sleeve 39 is slidable on a reduced diameter extension of the screw-threaded spindle 33 which, when sufficient manual force is applied to a nut 44, can be rotated to force apart interengaging teeth on the sleeve 39 and on a part 38 secured to the spindle 33, the teeth normally being held in engagement by a spring 45 embedded in rubber 46 and urging the sleeve 39 into engagement with a shoulder 42 of the spindle 33. In both embodiments, the respective shoulders on the screw-threaded spindle prevent full engagement of the interengaging teeth, the tension or compression in the rigging assisting the spring force to prevent disengagement of the teeth during a brake application.
