Abstract

[Also in Divisions H1 and H4] In a telephone dial mechanism shown in Fig. 1, the plastics gear-wheel 5 fixed to the finger-plate spindle 3 drives the plastics gearwheels 15-14 of the intermediate drive and 18 of the brake drive, the free-standing shafts 12 and 13 carrying these two drives being eccentrically mounted in bushings 10 and 11 which can be rotated to adjust the distance between the shafts and so allow for the wide range of tolerances expected in the injection plastics moulding process for the gear-wheels. The centrifugal braking or governor mechanism carried on shaft 13 comprises two braking shoes 19 (Fig. 7) pivoted at 41, 42 which upon rotation bear at points 45, 46 against a plastics bushing 17 fixed in the shaft bushing 11. The pressure of the shoes against the bushing is adjusted by moving the spring 20 along the notches. Bimetallic impulse springs 26 are operated by impulse wheel 5 but are maintained closed during anti-clockwise wind-up by cam portion 23 of a cam 6 which slides over wheel 5 as its stop 28 engages the stud 25 of the contact springs. The springs remain closed during the initial return motion until stud 25 slides off the cam portion 23. A stop 25 on cam 6 engaging abutment 30 repositions the cam 6 on the wheel 5. The frictional coupling between the cam 6 and impulse wheel 5 is adjustable by turning a saddle spring 7 (Fig. 4) so that the free end engages a different position on the raised knurled part 33 of cam 6.
