Abstract

1,128,516. Levelling items of equipment in aircraft or ships. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. (OPERATING) Ltd. 12 July, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 19074/66. Headings B7A, B7M and B7W. Provision is made in an aircraft or ship for relative alignment of items of equipment (e.g. navigation or radar equipment, guns or sextant mountings) to other items of equipment or to selected datums within the aircraft or ship. Each piece of equipment or a mounting therefor is provided with at least two instruments at known angles to one another, each instrument having an axis and being capable of giving a reading which is a function of the magnitude of the component of the Earth's gravitational field along that axis at any moment. Other items of equipment or a datum pad are similarly provided with such at least two instruments and then readings are taken of all the instruments with the aircraft or ship placed in two different angular positions in relation to the Earth's gravitational field. The mountings are then adjusted, in the light of the readings, into a desired angular relationship to one another or the existing angular relationship is determined. An aircraft may be placed in said two angular positions by rocking it in pitch about the ground wheels or a ship, e.g. a submarine may be tilted in pitch or roll by movement of ballast. The reading instruments may be levels or accelerometers.
