Abstract

865,344. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. Sept. 19, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954; Dec. 31, 1954], Nos. 27775/54 and 37806/54. Class 97(3) In an aircraft instrument for showing heading and altitude a spherical indicator is mounted in a gimbal system and positioned, through an electric servo system, from a gyro stabilised platform so as to operate in vertical flight. As shown; the hemispherical parts 8 and 9 are viewed through a fixed window and are stabilised, relative to the craft, by the servomotors 14, 15, 22, 23 through the gimbal systems 11, 16, 21 from a gyro-stabilised platform, not shown. The parts 8, 9 are moved about axis 10 by motor 14, motor 15 rotates gimbal 11 about axis 19, on gimbal 16, motor 23 on gimbal 21 rotates gimbal 16 about 20 and motor 22 rotates 21 about axis 3. The control about axis 3 is "loose" so as to maintain 18; 20 approximately perpendicular to prevent locking of the gimbals and the angle between axis 3, 19 not greater than one right angle. In a second embodiment, not shown, the set of horizontal gimbals 16, 21 of the first embodiment are replaced by a vertical set. Specification 22987/55 is referred to.
