[Also in Division B1] The invention comprises a method of preparing compounds of the formula in which R 1 denotes an aliphatic or aryl radical of 6-24 carbon atoms or an alkaryl radical of up to 24 carbon atoms and R 2 , R 3 and R 4 each denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, at least one denoting a methyl group. The compounds are made by reacting chloracetic acid with an alkanolamine containing 3 or 4 carbon atoms and having the hydroxy and amino groups linked to adjacent carbon atoms, this reaction being effected at about pH 9-12, and condensing the product with a carboxylic halide corresponding to R 1 in the formula above. The reaction mixture is then acidified to recover the desired product. An example is given in which chloracetic acid is reacted with isopropanolamine and the product is condensed with oleic acid chloride and then acidified to yield N-oleyl-6-methylmorpholone-2. Other suitable alkanolamines and carboxylic halides are specified. The morpholone derivatives decompose when heated with alkalies to yield salts of hydroxycarboxylic acids of the formula HO(R 4 )CH-C(R 2 )(R 3 )-N(COR 1 )-CH 2 -COOMe, in which Me denotes an alkali or alkaline-earth metal ion. The corresponding free acids are unstable and are reconverted into the morpholone derivatives by ring-closure. The morpholone derivatives are useful as water-in-oil emulsifiers and the salts of the hydroxycarboxylic acids are useful as oil-in-water emulsifiers, and the decomposition of the morpholone derivatives can thus be used to bring about any desired intermediate stage of emulsification.
