Abstract

Novel compounds of the formula (wherein X is H, halogen, NO 2 or C 1-6 alkoxy; Y is halogen, NO 2 or C 1-6 alkoxy; Z is halogen; and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are CH 3 , COOR, R being C 1-6 alkyl or aralkyl, or mono-, di- or tri-halomethyl, but one cannot be CH 3 when the other is mono-, di- or tri-halomethyl) are prepared by halogenation of the corresponding 4 - unsubstituted or 4 - COOH substituted pyrroles and/or by halogenation of the 2- and 5-methyl groups in the appropriate pyrroles. If the 4-position in the starting materials is unsubstituted or COOH substituted, halogenation occurs first at this position, (COOH being replaced by halogen) and then it occurs at 2- and 5-methyl groups if present, forming mono-, di- or tri-halomethyl groups. Examples are given, and methods for preparing the starting materials are also referred to.
