A grinding and friction-type rice husking and polishing machine comprises a grinding roll and a friction roll mounted on the same shaft. In one embodiment the machine comprises an emery stone grinding roll 20 and friction roll 23 provided with angularly spaced raised portions 23<SP>1</SP>, mounted on hollow shaft 14 and surrounded by perforated cylinders 31 and 34. Between rolls 20 and 23 is a frustoconical roll comprising a flat portion 21 and a spiral portion 22, surrounded by a stationary annular member 25 mounted on a plate 2 dividing grinding and friction sections 3 and 4, and an annular member 29 screw-threaded on member 25 such that the annular space between member 29 and the frusto-conical roll may be adjusted to control the rate of feed of the grains from section 3 to section 4. A fan 16 supplies air to section 4 via hollow shaft 14. The pressure in section 4 may be regulated by device 41 controlling the outlet 11<SP>1</SP> of section 4. In another embodment the annular members 25 and 29 may be replaced by one movable annular member. In use rice from inlet 10<SP>1</SP> is fed by spiral roll 19 to grinding roll 20 which partially husks the grains and scars the husks. The partially processed grains are fed at a controlled rate to friction roll 23 which completes the husking and polishing of the grains. The polished rice is discharged through outlet 11<SP>1</SP>. The rice bran obtained by the action of rolls 20 and 23 is removed through the perforated cylinders 31 and 34 to chambers 35 and 36 and conveyed to conduit 38 by suction applied by fan 16.
