Apparatus for sintering a mixture of granular material and powdered fuel comprises U-shaped pallets 24 with upstanding sides, a grate bottom and open ends traversing a loop track 24 over an ignition box 125, and a hood 27 with stacks 28, 29 incorporating motor operated blowers said pallets being charged with a continuous bed of pellets from a bin 10 via screw conveyer 11, screw paddle agglomerator 13, conveyers 15 and 17, a hopper 18 above a pelletizer 19, and a lateral transfer device 20 incorporating a short 21. The pallets 24 are moved along the bottom run of track 23 by a pusher 42 operated by fluid motor 45, lifted by an arm 65 driven from motor M over the discharge hopper 25, and returned on upper run 23b by projections 76 on chains 71 also driven from motor M. The pallet grate comprises transverse bars supporting longitudinal bars having a middle of maximum width tapering off upwardly and downwardly, Figs. 20 and 22 (not shown). Fuel from main 131 and pipes 133 is mixed with air from main 132 and pipes 134 in pipes 135 leading to burners in the ignition box 125, which box is also supplied with air by a branch from the main 132. Each burner, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), extends transversely of the pallets and has a central elongated T-shaped flame spreader flanked on both sides by two rows of burner ports. Beyond the ignition box 125, a short low pressure plenum chamber 150 supplies combustion air upwardly through the pallets. This is followed by a long plenum chamber supplied at controlled higher pressure by transverse ducts 143 and 144. This air is delivered upwardly through a plate, initially formed with small circular holes and later with longitudinal slots, Figs. 15, 17 and 18 (not shown). Operational control is semi-automatic by a timer applied to the pusher mechanism motor 45, and limit switches, as S2, operated by arm 65 controlling motor M. The apparatus may be used for calcining limestone, cement or ores or producing aggregates from clay, flyash and/ or powdered coal.
