Abstract
1,126,915. Linear polyesters of increased molecular weight. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 20 Jan., 1966 [25 Feb., 1965], No. 2725/66. Heading C3R. Film- or fibre-forming polyesters of polycarboxylic acids and polyols are increased in molecular weight by reaction with a cyclic ether or imine wherein n is 2 to 5, C n H 2n represents a straight- or branched-chain hydrocarbon group to two different C atoms of which X is joined, and X is -O-, -S- or -NR-, where R is H or an alkyl group, followed by further polycondensation. The first reaction may take place at 250-320‹C, preferably using 0À01 to 20 p.b.w. of cyclic compound per 100 p.b.w. of polyester; the further polycondensation may be performed in a conventional manner, preferably in thin layers (10-50 mm.). The process may be repeated. In examples polyethylene terephthalate, molten (continuous process) or shredded (in an autoclave) is treated with ethylene oxide or ethylene imine at 265- 285‹ C. or 150‹ C. under 20 atm. then further condensed at 280-285‹ C. and 0À2 mm. Hg.
