Abstract

1,126,744. Photo-electric apparatus. RANK ORGANISATION Ltd. July 27, 1966 [July 2, 1965], No.28057/65. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] An interferometer adapted to produce two interference patterns having a constant phase difference, comprises a laser 1, a plane polarising element 4, a beam splitter 5 for splitting the polarised beam into two paths, retardation means 7 located in one of the paths with its principal axis disposed at 45 degrees to the plane of polarisation, a mirror, the displacement of which is being measured, reflecting one of the split beams to the beam splitter 5, a second beam splitter 9 for splitting the recombined beam into two further paths, and plane polarising analysers 10, 12 respectively located in the further paths with their principal axes inclined at 45 degrees in opposite directions in relation to the plane of polarisation of the element 4. Radiation passed by the analysers 10, 12 is incident on photo-cells 11, 13 which are connected to the X and Y deflection systems of a cathode ray tube. The photo-cells may also operate a reversible electronic counter.
