Abstract

1,126,211. Nylon-6 articles. COURTAULDS Ltd. 13 Jan., 1966 [14 Jan., 1965; 1 March, 1965], Nos. 1636/65 and 8626/65. Heading C3R. Nylon-6 articles of improved physical properties may be produced by simultaneously polymerizing and moulding caprolactam in the presence of either (a) a polyether of formula RO[CHR<SP>1</SP>CH 2 O] n R<SP>11</SP>, in which R and R<SP>11</SP> are alkyl radicals of at least 3 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP>= Me or H and n is an integer, (b) a paraffin having a b.p. above 190‹ C. or (c) a silicone oil as crystallization modifier. Modifiers specified are (a) the dipropyl, dibutyl and diamyl ethers of diethylene glycol and (b) n-dodecane, n-tridecane, n-tetradecane, n-pentadecane and nhexadecane. 3-10% may be used. In examples the polymerization mixture containing lactam, modifier and acetyl caprolactam as initiator is dried by heating under reduced pressure before sodium is added and polymerization brought about by further heating at a higher temperature.
