Abstract

A coolant duct connecting with a reactor pressure vessel is provided with a counterflow brake to restrict the rate of escape of coolant from the vessel in the event of failure of the duct. The counterflow brake may be used in combination with other shut-off or flow restrictor devices and offers an extended time interval to introduce the other slower-acting devices. Even a factor of two reduction in the initial rate of depressurization of a gas-cooled reactor can be most advantageous from a reactor safety point of view. The main purpose of the invention is, however, to prevent instantaneous loss of coolant in the event of an inlet duct failure; this also precludes ingress of air into the reactor, and stagnation of the coolant flow. Avoidance of these hazards reduces the possibility of an exothermic graphite/air reaction and the number of failed fuel pins during the short period (100 Ásec.) immediately following the duct failure. In an integral reactor in which there are no main coolant duets outside the pressure vessel, counterflow brakes may profitably be included in the coolant service ducts, such as those required for coolant treatment.
