Abstract

1,126,069. Zoom lenses. CANON CAMERA CO. Inc. Sept. 13, 1965 [Sept. 15, 1964], No.38940/65. Heading G2J. A zoom lens has a divergent group I which is movable only for focusing, a fixed converging group II, a movable divergent group III, a movable divergent group IV, aperture stop AS, and fixed convergent groups V, VI, wherein: - 1. The focal length of group V is so chosen that the equivalent focal length of groups I to V combined is always negative throughout the zoom range and the absolute value thereof at the shortest focal length position is between 1À5 and 2À5 times the minimum focal length of the zoom lens f min . and the focal length of group III lies in the range 2À2 to 1À6 times f min . 2. The absolute value of the focal length (f F ) of group I is less than 1/1À3 of the maximum focal length of the zoom lens f max . the focal length f fr of group II is less than 1/1À3 of |f F | , the spacing between the second principal point of group I and the first principal point of group II is between 0À23 and 0À33 times f max . and the combined focal length of groups I and II is between 3/5 f max . and f max. 3. The refractive index of the glass of each lens of group III is greater than 1À8 and of group IV greater than 1À7, the refractive index of each negative element in group I is greater than 1À65 and that of each positive element in group II, V is less than 1À55. 4. At least two negative elements are included in group II, the difference in their Abbe numbers from those of the positive elements in the group being at least 35, each such negative element being cemented to a positive element such that the centres of curvature of the cemented surfaces are located at points on the optical axis which are on the same side of the cemented surface as the point at which a marginal light ray incident upon the cemented surface and which reaches the centre of the image surface, or the extension of such a ray, crosses the axis. 5. Group V has at least one positive singlet and one negative singlet, and in group VI there are at least two bi-convex doublets, the cemented surface of each being divergent with its centre of curvature on the opposite side of the stop from the point at which such surface crosses the optical axis. Optical data are provided for the example shown.
