1,126,057. Recovery of vanadium. ANGLO AMERICAN CORP. OF SOUTH AFRICA Ltd. 18 Nov., 1966 [22 Nov., 1965], No. 51737/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division B2] Vanadium is extracted from vanadiferous iron ores (e.g. magnetite) by comminuting the ore, adding thereto sodium sulphate and one or both of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate, and heating the mix in a kiln to a temperature at which the vanadium reacts with at least one of the additives to yield a soluble vanadium compound. Sodium vanadate thus produced may be leached out and the resulting solution treated to precipitate ammonium metavanadate which is converted to vanadium pentoxide in known manner. The additives are preferably intimately mixed with the comminuted ore prior to kilning, and together constitute about 3¢ wt. per cent of the total mix, the sodium sulphate constituting about 1 wt. per cent. The kiln is preferably a rotating kiln which is inclined to the horizontal and which has a burner at its lower end. The temperature in the kiln may be about 500‹ C. at its upper inlet end and 1100-1300‹ C. at the outlet end. The kilning is preferably carried out in the presence of about 4 wt. per cent of free oxygen. A plant for the execution of the process is described and illustrated.
