In a radial cylinder hydraulic pump or motor or air compressor a face valve 256 is interposed between one face of the rotor 201 and the stator 202 and the passages therein, locating tubular bodies 269, . . . 272 communicating with the stator inlet and outlet passages 216, 217, have a greater cross-sectional areas at their outer than at their inner ends 238,239. The difference in crosssectional areas provides, during rotation of the rotor 201, a force urging the face valve 256 towards the rotor and the rotor towards the face valve at the opposite end of the stator. Each pair of tubular bodies may be separated by a sealing ring 224. The face valve (156), Fig. 8 (not shown), is mounted for limited tilting movement in ring (148) mounted for limited axial movement in the stator (102). Chambers (127), Fig. 6 (not shown), provided in the face valve (156) house pistons (128), Fig. 8, which bear on the stator and the chambers are connected by means of pressure fluid actuated valve pistons (158), Fig. 10 (not shown), in the stator to the stator inlet or outlet passage (136 or 137) containing fluid under high pressure. The chambers (127) may be provided in the stator and the pressure fluid actuated valve pistons (158) in the face valve (156). The co-operating valve faces may be respectively convex and concave. The track rings 205a which co-operates with the pistons 204 through shoes 206 are mounted by bearings 209 in an eccentricity adjustment device 273 or 274. The devices 273 and 274 may be operated together or independently. The rotor shaft 207 and 307 may be connected by a clutch comprising a spindle 277 with a head 276 movable into and out of the recess 275 in the shaft 207.
