Abstract

1,125,549. Co-ordinated ionic copolymers. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 1 Aug., 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 35306/67. Headings C3P and C3R. Co-ordinated ionic copolymers comprising a random copolymer of ethylene and at least one C 3-8 α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in which at least some of the carboxyl groups are ionized by metal ions of valence 1 to 4, at least some of which are co-ordinated by electron donor molecules, said copolymer containing at least 50 mole per cent of ethylene and 0À2 to 25 mole per cent of acid, may be prepared by reacting the ionized polymer or a mixture of polymer and metal salt, molten or in solution, with at least one electron donor compound capable of co-ordinating with the metal ions without substantial rupture of the polymer/ metal bonds. Preferred polymers are copolymers of ethylene, methacrylic acid and optionally vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate. Preferred metal ions are divalent copper, cobalt, nickel, magnesium and zinc. Preferred donor molecules are those containing oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen, many of which are listed including alkyl, alkylene and heterocyclic amines; amino, thiol and hydroxy aromatic compounds, dyes and polyalkylene imines. Alternatively, the co-ordinating molecule may be covalently bonded to the acid copolymer, e.g. by incorporating therein units of acrylonitrile, 2 - hydroxy - 4 - methacryloxybenzophenone or p-vinylphenyl salicylate. The products are said to have good weathering properties. Examples describe the preparation of co-ordinated copolymers from ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers ionized with zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt, magnesium, manganese and lead, and co-ordinated with diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, poly - (ethylene imine), poly - (N - t. - butylethylene imine), purpurin, methyl violet, piperazine, salicylic acid and hexamethylene diamine. The copolymers may also be mixed with fillers containing co-ordinatable metal ions, e.g. asbestos and Wollastonite, and conventional antioxidants such as 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thiobis-(6-t.-butyl-mcresol).
