Abstract

1,125,272. Proximity detectors. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Oct. 18, 1966 [Jan.10, 1966], No.46590/66. Heading G1N. Apparatus for inspecting electrically conductive flexible lids on vacuum sealed glass food containers, comprises two coils E 1 , E 2 connected in a "proximity detector" bridge circuit for sensing the arrival of a container at the testing station, two coils D 1 , D 2 connected in a "position detector" bridge circuit for sensing when the container is in a predetermined position at the testing station, and three coils A, B, C for sensing the profile of the container lid. If the lid's profile is outside predetermined limits, the container is automatically rejected. Coils A and C have equal numbers of turns and are connected in series aiding relation in one arm of a "dud detector" bridge circuit and coil B having a number of turns equal to the sum of the turns of coils A and C, is connected in a second arm. Coils A and C provide compensation for allowable variations in height of the containers and for any tilting of the containers. When a dud is detected, transistor Q 4 is rendered conductive to trigger a one-shot multivibrator Q 5 , Q 6 to energize a relay 93 to admit air to ejector 18 to push the container down chute 17. Resistor R 2 , in a voltage divider chain R 3 , R 1 , R 2 , is normally short-circuited except when the proximity detector bridge is unbalanced and the position detector bridge is balanced, whereby unbalance of the dud detector bridge can trigger transistor Q 4 only if a container is properly positioned in the predetermined position at the testing station. The coils may be mounted within a steel housing provided with heating coils (54, 55) and arranged to be pivoted out of the way if too high a container contacts a ramp (58) on the underside of the housing.
