Abstract

1,125,155. Detecting length by radar methods. SOC. DE FABRICATION D'INSTRUMENTS DE MESURE (S.F.I.M.). 15 Sept., 1965 [22 Sept., 1964], No. 39359/65. Heading H4P. The invention relates to the measurement of the length L of a strip of moving material 1-e.g. strip iron on a rolling mill-by projecting a C.W. beam of radiation towards the material at a frequency f 0 , receiving the doppler shifted reflected wave at frequency f 1 , deriving the doppler beat, and determining said length by counting the number of cycles in the doppler beat. If the length of the material is L and the velocity is V, then the duartion of the doppler signal is L/V. The doppler beat fd is given by:- and the number n of cycles counted is given by :- The count on counter 7 may be the number n directly, or the scale of counting may be such that the count gives L directly. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 972,775.
