Abstract
1320390 Velocity measurement BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 29 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 61670/70 Heading H4D In apparatus for measuring the local velocity of a radiation-permeable medium 9<SP>1</SP> by means of the doppler effect the beam 2<SP>1</SP> from a coherent radiation source 1<SP>1</SP> is split by a diffraction grating 12<SP>1</SP> into a reference beam 4<SP>1</SP> and a signal beam 5<SP>1</SP> which are directed to a measuring position 8<SP>1</SP> in the medium 9<SP>1</SP>. The reference beam and the scattered component of the signal beam 5<SP>1</SP> are then passed to a mixer receiver 11<SP>1</SP> where the frequency difference is obtained from the beat of the two beam frequencies. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a glass plate having parallel sides is disposed between the coherent source and the diffraction grating, thus providing a plurality of parallel beams each of which is split by the diffraction grating into a reference beam and a signal beam, each reference beam and corresponding signal beam being directed to one of a plurality of measuring positions, each having associated with it a corresponding mixer receiver.
