Abstract

In apparatus for electrolytic decomposition of an electrolyte into two gases, a pressure vessel containing the electrolyte has a separator for separating the portions of electrolyte from which the gases are evolved and two chambers above the electrolyte for confining the separate gases, the operation of the apparatus being controlled by a system comprising a gas-pressure regulating valve for each chamber, means for measuring the difference in levels of the electrolyte in the chambers, means for measuring the pressure of gas in at least one of the chambers and valve control means for responding to a combination of the outputs from the level difference measuring means and the gas pressure measuring means, firstly to open one of the valves and to close the other so as to keep the difference in levels to a minimum or within determined limits and secondly to open or close both valves to keep the pressures of the gases in both chamber at a determined value or within determined limits. Preferably the valves are operated by signals derived from computing relays.
