[Also in Division G1] The speed at which yarn or thread is fed to a textile machine is measured by replacing the yarn or thread with a marled measuring yarn and determining the frequency with which the marls pass a photoelectric scanning head. The desired speed for correct operation may be predetermined by performing the textile operation on the yarn or thread normally used, adjusting the machine to produce an acceptable product, replacing the yarn or thread with the marled yarn and measuring the speed corresponding to the correct setting of the machine. The invention may be applied to textile machines producing a fabric from, or merely operating on a yarn or thread e.g. weaving, weft and warp knitting on circular, flat or straight-bar machines, warping, sewing, braiding, winding and false twisting. The photoelectric scanning head comprises a block 2 fig. 2 of black Perspex (Regd. Trade Mark) having a lamp 6 and a photoresistor or phototransistor 7 in bores 5 which communicate by bores 8 with a groove 3 shaped to take the marled yarn 1 without damaging it. The block is covered by a snap-on chromium plated brass cover 4. The cell 7 is connected by a transistor amplifier to a counter or a speed indicator, fig. 3 (not shown). If the yarn speed is too high for accurate detection of the marls by the scanning head, it may be apparently reduced stroboscopically by flashing the lamp 6 or inserting a rotating apertured disc between the yarn and the cell 7.
