In telegraph transmitter in which a complete message is recorded on punched tape and subsequently transmitted from the tape, a programmed keyboard unit generates a message format comprising preset signals having a number of gaps for information text and variable data. Data, e.g. address and priority signals, is inserted in the appropriate gaps by selection of one of each of a group of keys on the programme unit, depression of a single address key generating a complete address in teleprinter code, and the information text is inserted by a teleprinter keyboard. When the complete message has been recorded it is transmitted, provided that for each gap in the format an appropriate key of the programme unit or of the teleprinter has been operated. The time of transmission, CR and LF signals are automatically added. A printer monitors the signals fed to the punch. To ensure that the wrong form of data is not inserted in a gap the programmed unit locks any groups of keys inappropriate to the gap under consideration. Each address may comprise a main and a supplementary section, each chosen by a single key. The message may be provided with multiple addresses, and a preset series of addresses may be selected by single key operation. The programmed unit selects the relevant teleprinter combinations from a generator by means of diodes, cores, relay matrices or selector switches.
