Abstract

To prevent defects, such as gas bubbles, on the underside of glass ribbon made by the float process, the molten metal 112 is contained in a tank 111 with refractory parts 126, 128 and a positive fluid differential pressure is established <PICT:1124468/C1/1> between at least some parts of the interior and exterior of the refractories. A subatmospheric pressure is preferably established below the refractory bricks 126 only over the hottest zones of the molten metal. As shown, the clay bricks 126 are secured by a clay cement 130 and conduits 131 pass through the tank bottom and are connected to a vacuum pump 134. In an alternative construction, holes in the tank bottom are covered by an outer shell which is connected to a vacuum pump.
