Abstract

1,124,355. Surgical infusion device. UNITED STATES CATHETER & INSTRUMENT CORP. 15 Oct., 1965 [16 Oct., 1964], No. 43846/65. Heading A5R. [Also in Division Fl] A self-contained portable infusion device comprises a case containing an arcuate fixed segment of flexible tubing, rollers rotatably mounted and positioned to close the bore of the tubing, means for rotating the rollers along the segment of tubing, a reservoir for fluid connected to one end of the tubing, and fluid outlet means at the other end of the tubing for atachment, for example via a catheter, to a body to be infused with fluid which is passed along the tubing from the interior to the exterior of the case under pressure caused by rotation of the rollers along the segment of tubing. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 3, the segment of tubing 24 is retained on the interior surface of an arcuate inflexible track member 23 which is positioned by studs 29, retaining screw 31 and annular ridge 62 surrounding an aperture in case 50; the tubing, one end of which is connected to reservoir 53, is further located where it passes through the wall of the case by grommet 32. Mounted by spindles 47 on the periphery of a rotor to extend outwardly therefrom are rollers 22, the periphery of the rotor being parallel to and spaced from the track member. The rotor is drivable by clockwork means including a mainspring operatively connected to the rotor by a driving mechanism the speed of which is controlled by an associated clock escapement mechanism. The means for driving the rotor may include a ratchet mechanism to permit manual rotation of the rotor in order to prime or flush the tubing; as illustrated, a priming key may be inserted through aperture 84 in plate 86 to engage with priming gear 48 which is mounted on spindle 61 upon which also is mounted the rotor and mainspring. The device additionally may comprise such a priming key and also a winding key for winding the mainspring. The means for driving the rotor may be such that the rotor makes one complete revolution per hour to give slow and continuous delivery of fluid, for example a parenteral fluid; the volume of fluid passing through the tubing may be adjusted, for example by suitable choice of the speed of the clock mechanism and/or of the bore of the tubing, to between 3 and 10 millilitres per day.
