Abstract

1,124,163. Selective printing. CLEVITE CORP. 10 Sept., 1965 [25 Sept., 1964; 13 Jan., 1965; 12 July, 1965], No. 38713/65. Heading B6F. Writing-jet selective printers; electrical input signals: -Selective printer for printing characters on a recording medium 23 in response to input signals representative of the characters comprises a pressurized ink reservoir 32 from which the ink is forced into a tube 15 provided at its end with a piezoelectric device actuated by a light frequency oscillator 27 to convert the ink into drops issuing from a nozzle 15<SP>1</SP> and passing through an annular charging funnel 35 in which the drops acquire an electrical charge. The drops are then passed through a pair of deflecting plates 21, 22 to which is applied a differential potential so as to direct the drops to selected positions in character forming matrix or to be a drop catcher 26. Character selection is effected by a character data transmitter 9, Fig. 2, (not shown) whose signals are applied to a function generator 11 in which the digital signals are converted to analog signals which are applied via an amplifier 12 and lines 13, 14 to the tube 15 and tunnel 35. For phased printing of characters the recording medium drive 23x, oscillator 27 and function generator 11 are synchronized. Multiple character selection:-A plurality of tubes 15 may be associated in a line and supplied from a character data transmitter 40, Fig. 3 (not shown), supplying simultaneously signals to a corresponding plurality of function generators to print a number of characters at a time. Type carriages:-The writing jet printer may be mounted in a traversable carriage 50, Fig. 5 (not shown) moving on a guide rail 51 above a revolving recording medium drum 52. A control stage 60 synchronizes the rotational motion of the drum 52, linear motion of carriage 50, the supply of the signals from the function generators 11 and oscillators 27 so that each character is properly recorded on to the recording medium 23<SP>11</SP>.
