Abstract

1,124,050. Magnetic fastenings. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 26 Nov., 1965 [1 Dec., 1964], No. 50332/65. Heading E2A. A magnetic lock for use with a hinged door comprises a casing 4 having a bolt guide 3 pivotally mounted therein, a bolt 2 co-operating magnetically with a recessed keeper, the bolt being arranged to slide in the bolt guide and also to tilt away from the keeper about a fulcrum parallel to the pivotal axis of the bolt guide, so that the bolt can be separated from the keeper, an operating shaft movable axially by pushing or pulling, a bolt-blocking mechanism which is coupled to the operating shaft and which in operation prevents tilting of the bolt and an operating-shaft-locking mechanism which in operation prevents axial movement of the operating shaft, wherein the bolt is released from the locked state by releasing the operating shaft locking mechanism and moving the operating shaft axially so that the bolt blocking mechanism is disengaged. In the construction shown the bolt guide is pivotally mounted by means of a shaft 5 and the bolt blocking mechanism comprises a pawl 7 and an arm 10 both of which are journalled on a shaft 27, the pawl and arm being lesiliently coupled together. The pawl engages the member 6 to prevent tilting movement of the bolt and its movement in this direction is limited by a pin 8 which is engaged by a limb 9 of the arm 10. Another limb 11 of the arm 10 has a slot 12 near its free end which engages a pin 13 which extends substantially radially from the operating shaft 14 and movement of the shaft 14 away from the casing causes the pawl to release the member 6 so that the bolt sleeve can tilt. The operating shaft 14 is supported by two sleeves 16, 17 one on each side of the casing 4 and a door knob 18 is secured to the end of the shaft 14 which is on the inside of the door. A helical spring 15 surrounds the shaft 14 and biases it in the direction in which the pawl is engaged with the member 6. The shaft locking mechanism comprises a pin 19 which extends radially from the shaft 14 and three slots 20, 21, and 22 in the sleeve 16; the slot 20 extends axially of the shaft so that movement to allow the pawl to release the member 6 is possible and the slots 21 and 22 extend circumferentially from the ends of the slot 20, the slot 21 when the pin 19 is engaged with it preventing movement of the operating shaft while the pawl is in the blocking position and the slot 22 preventing movement of the operating shaft when the pawl has released the member 6 so that the door can be opened and closed merely by pushing or pulling it. The sleeve 17 is part of a barrel lock mechanism which includes a push button containing a key actuated barrel 25, the push button being fastened to the sleeve 17 by a bolt 24 which is released by rotating the barrel 25; when this has been done the push button can be pushed inwardly to move the operating shaft axially to disengage the bolt blocking mechanism from the bolt guide 3 so that the door can be opened; this can only be done if the operating shaft is not held against movement by the engagement of the pin 19 with the slot 21.
