Abstract

A continuous process for the manufacture of hexamethylene diamine comprises hydrogenating adiponitrile wherein the hydrogenation is performed under pressure in the presence of molar excesses of ammonia and hydrogen and with a cobalt catalyst under conditions such that the temperature of the reaction mixture leaving the hydrogenation zone is at least 120 DEG C. and wherein adiponitrile purified by fractional distillation and admixture with water followed by alternate contact with cation and anion exchange resins is employed as starting material without preliminary drying to remove dissolved water. The amount of water employed is preferably from 3 1/2 % by wt. up to the saturation point of the adiponitrile at 50 DEG C. and the hydrogenation is preferably effected at a starting temperature of 80-100 DEG C. to a finishing temperature of 120-150 DEG C. using a reduced cobalt oxide catalyst, suitably at pressures of 200 to 500 atmospheres. Suitable mol. ratios of ammonia to adiponitrile are from 22 mols to 52 mols of ammonia per mol. of adiponitrile and hydrogen is present in excess.
