Abstract

Cellular rods of regenerated cellulose are produced by forming a mixture of (a) a viscose having a ball-fall viscosity of at least 150 seconds and a salt point of at least 15; (b) a water-soluble salt which forms an alkaline solution in water, of average particle diameter less than 600 microns, the ratio of salt to viscose being at least 3:1 by weight; (c) at least 80% by weight of the cellulose in the viscose of a water-insoluble particulate filler; extruding the mixture through a die into an alkaline bath saturated with the ions of the water-soluble salt and at a temperature higher than 90 DEG C. to form a rod, removing the rod from the bath when regeneration of the cellulose is substantially complete, and bringing the rod into contact with water to dissolve the salt particles. The preferred water-soluble salt is trisodium phosphate, and the insoluble filler may be short fibres, fibrilar particles such as wood pulp, or an adsorbent, e.g. activated charcoal, alumina, magnesia, clays or zeolites, fuller's earth, bauxite or ion-exchange resins. Suitably the viscose has a viscosity of about 700 seconds and a salt point of 20, and the extrusion is done by means of a screw extruder. The water used for leaching out the salt particles is suitably at a temperature of at least 80 DEG C., to hasten the leaching and ensure complete regeneration of the cellulose.ALSO:A filter-tip for a cigarette comprises a foraminous rod of regenerated cellulose produced by forming a mixture of (a) a viscose having a bull-fall viscosity of at least 150 seconds and a salt-point of at least 15, (b) a water-soluble salt which forms an alkaline solution in water, of average particle diameter less than 600 microns, the ratio of salt to viscose being at least 3 : 1 by weight, (c) at least 80% by weight of the cellulose in the viscose of a water-insoluble particulate filler; extruding the mixture through a die into an alkaline bath saturated with the ions of the water-soluble salt and at a temperature more than 90 DEG C. to form a rod, removing the rod from the bath when regeneration of the cellulose is substantially complete, and bringing the rod into contact with water to dissolve the salt particles (see Division C3). Exemplified filters contain as water-insoluble fillers a mixture of powdered cellulose and cellulose fibres or an activated powdered carbon adsorbent. These may be used as the inner or adsorbent part of a two-part filter tip or may be used to replace the whole filter tip. Before use, the cellulose rod is usually desulphurised and bleached, unless it contains a dark-coloured adsorbent.
