Abstract

1,123,598. Seaming. GIRLING Ltd. 1 Aug., 1966 [5 Aug., 1965], No. 33559/65. Heading B3J. [Also in Division F2] In a motor vehicle suspension unit comprising a valved piston 12 which works in an hydraulic cylinder 14 with a gas space 22 and has a rod 16 which extends through a seal 20 and an end cap 18 at one end of the cylinder, and a parallel gas spring 26 formed by a flexible and inextensible tubular diaphragm 32, a cup 28 welded to the free end of the piston-rod 16, and a cylindrical guard tube 30, the cup 28, tube 30 and diaphragm 32 are sealingly secured together by forming an external groove 42, of rectangular cross-section and having sharply defined shoulders in the cup 28 and upsetting the tube 30 to form a corresponding circumferential projection 44 which extends towards the groove 42 to define a convergent gap in which the diaphragm is held compressed. In a method of forming the sealed joint the cup (28), diaphragm (32), and tube (30) are loosely assembled and a plurality of rollers (48), Fig. 3 (not shown), profiled to have a central convex portion, are pressed against the outside of the tube (30) opposite the groove (42) while the tubular assembly (28), (38), (30) is rotated, the rollers (48) being forced inwardly stepwise between successive revolutions of work. The rollers may be replaced by a tool with jaws for upsetting the wall of the tube. The shoulders of the side walls of the groove 42 are slightly chamfered so as not to cut into the material of the diaphragm. The cup 28 is provided with a connection, not shown, for the introduction and withdrawal of compressed fluid. The tube 30 may be formed with a groove, a corresponding projection being formed on the outer surface of the cup 28. A similar type of connection may be used to connect the inner end of the diaphragm 32 to the upper end of the cylinder 14 instead of the restraining band, as shown.
