A method of making a bell containing one or more reinforcement layers of metal or textile cords comprises interposing one or more layers of metal or textile cords between two layers of vulcanizable material, the three or more layers being assembled on a drum from which they are removed in the form of a sleeve which is secured after vulcanization to a base layer, the base layer being preferably laid down on a second drum over which the sleeve is introduced, a facing layer of vulcanizable material being applied over the assembly and a second vulcanization step being effected. In the drawings, a layer of vulcanizable tissue or fabric 2, roughened on one surface and calendered on the other, is located with its roughened surface in contact with drum 1, a textile or wire cord 3 is helically wound around 2, a further layer of vulcanizable tissue or fabric 4 which has been roughened on one surface and calendered on the other being located with its roughened surface in contact with 3, the assembly being vulcanized and located on a drum 5 which has been precoated with a vulcanizable layer 6, the assembly being optionally covered with a vulcanizable layer 7, cut into belts and vulcanized.
