Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2 and H1] A control device 10 comprises two relatively rotatable members 11, 12 the relative angular position of which determines the value of an electrical parameter (e.g. resistance or voltage), and a rotatable control member (a knob attached to shaft 21) for effecting relative rotation of members 11, 12, whereby the relative angular displacement of members 11, 12 varies logarithmically with the amount of rotation of the control member. In the embodiments described, a linear variable potentiometer 10 having a casing 11 and a rotatable spindle 12 is employed, the spindle 12 being rigidly attached to an arm 20 which is rotated by the control member attached to shaft 21. An arm 26 is rigidly attached to casing 11 and pivoted at 29 to one end of a further arm 27, the other end of which is pivoted to a fixed point 28. The linkage 26, 27 is arranged such that the relative angular displacement of spindle 12 and casing 11 bears a logarithmic relation to the amount of rotation of the control member (shaft 21). For reasons of convenience of space shaft 21 and spindle 12 may be unitary (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) and also rotate, through a gear train (35, 36, 37), an arm (33) in the same direction as shaft 21. The arm (33) has pivoted at its extremity one end of link 27, the other end of which is pivoted to the extremity of arm 26.
