Abstract

1,122,982. Condensation of vapours; distillation of water. G. B. BATHURST. 18 Nov., 1965 [20 Aug., 1964], No. 34078/64. Heading B1B. [Also in Division F4] A tucular tower 1 surmounting a liquid containing pool 3 whose ground area is greater than that of the base of the tower has a series of circumferentially spaced intakes 5 with associated directional means 16 whereby incoming air which evaporates some of the liquid from the pool is tangential to tower wall so imparting a vortex effect and causing cooling of the air and condensation of the vapour on the tower wall &c. 2 lines through jet nozzles 14' and blowers 13 boost the intake of air through intakes 5. When used as a steam condenser steam is supplied through nozzles 14', and the condensate collecting in trough 9 overflows into the well 3. When used as a still for salt water, the plate 11 above the pool extension 2 is transparent for heating by solar rays. Additional cooling is set up by circulating air through a central pipe 15, water condensing on the pipe and being caught in trough 19. A liner 10 may be fitted within the tower wall to prevent heating due to suns rays. The tower may also be used as a cooling tower (see Division F4)
