Abstract

1,122,861. Coating apparatus. T. B. BUSH and H. N. BUSH. 7 Feb., 1966 [11 Feb., 1965; 1 May, 1965; 27 May, 1965], Nos. 5894/65, 18412/65 and 22502/65. Heading B2L. [Also in Division B8] Sheet coating apparatus comprises a coating machine B in which separate sheets are passed between a backing cylinder 9 and liquid applying roller 13, means A for feeding separate sheets to the cylinder grippers 10 of such machine, an endless take-off gripper conveyor 14 for taking the successive coated sheets from said cylinder and conveying them on its lower stretch, a tunnel oven or dryer D having a series of radiant heaters 39 or having hot air blowing provision, an endless oven gripper conveyor 40 for taking the successive sheets from the take-off conveyor 14 and conveying them on its upper stretch through said oven, a cooling tunnel E having an endless gripper conveyor 50 for taking the successive sheets from the oven gripper conveyor 40 and conveying them by its lower stretch through the cooling tunnel E supported on an open work apron 55 and means F for delivering the sheets from said cooling conveyor. Common power means 24 is provided for driving the coating machine, the take-off conveyor, the oven-conveyor and the cooling conveyor, but auxiliary power means 89 is, provided for driving the oven conveyor and cooling conveyor when the coating machine and take-off conveyor have been stopped, these preferably being automatic means for starting the auxiliary drive when the main drive is stopped. The travelling movements of the grippers on the take-off and oven conveyors are automatically synchronised when these are connected to the main drive means and the oven conveyor is arranged to travel at a lower speed than the take-off conveyor such that the sheets are spaced closer on the former than on the latter. The conveyors carry transverse gripper bars the grippers being automatically operated by cam means and provided with stops or abutments to ensure that each sheet is gripped only along an uncoated strip on its leading edge, and the oven conveyor also carries, between each pair of adjacent gripper bars, a flexible apron 46 to support the trailing sheet. The cooling tunnel E has banks of perforated pipes 56, 57 above and below the lower stretch of the conveyor and coupled to a supply of cooling air under pressure, said pipes being connected to manifolds by flexible or rotary couplings to permit easy exchange of said pipes and rotary adjustment to vary the angle of impingement of the jets of air.
