Abstract
1,122,725. Cathode-ray tube circuits; semiconductor switching circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 24 Oct., 1966 [26 Nov. 1965], No. 47517/66. Headings H3T and H4T. The deflection windings of an electromagnetically - deflected cathode-ray tube and to which a current of varying magnitude is supplied are shunted by a plurality of resistors the number of which is varied directly as the magnitude of the current. The invention is concerned with a display system in which the tube beam is deflected in straight lines between X, Y co-ordinate positions specified by digital signals from a computer, such signals being converted to analogue form to provide the deflection currents for the tube windings, the operation of the arrangement according to the invention resulting in a variation of the damping of the windings in accordance with the magnitude of the deflection currents so that the trace produced is of uniform velocity and therefore of constant intensity independently of the length of such trace. Thus, considering the X deflection circuit, the two halves X 1 X of the pushpull deflection windings which are shunted by respective adjustable resistors R R, are connected to one end of binary weighted resistors R/1, R/2 . . . R/8 and #R/1, #R/2 ... #R/8 the other ends of which are connected via diodes D1 . . . D8 to transistor switches 21 ... 28 which, when conductive, connect such ends to the potential +V which is the potential at the mid point of windings X 1 , X. Thus, in accordance with the state of the switches the latter are shunted by one or more of the resistors. The switches are operated by the outputs of a counter 30 the four stages of which are set by the four most significant digits in the " word " which specifies the larger of the X, Y co-ordinates of the end-point of the intended trace. This, which may be a ten " bit " word, is supplied from a computer to register 11 and after conversion to analogue form in D/A converter 12 is supplied via buffer amplifiers 14, 15 to the deflection windings. The counter thus sets the switches in accordance with the magnitude of the larger of the X and Y deflections (the Y circuitry 201 being similar to the X circuitry 20) and this setting is then reduced to zero by an oscillator 34 connected to the counter via AND gate 36 which is enabled by a signal from the computer at an appropriate time.
