Abstract

3a ,5 - Cyclo - 6b ,19 - oxido - 5a - androstan - 17 - one is obtained by subjecting a compound having the formula <FORM:1122600/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrocarbon side chain of 8 to 10 carbon atoms to the action of a microorganism selected from those micro-organisms of the genera Corynebacterium and Arthrobacter under aerobic conditions or to the action of the enzymes produced by the said micro-organism under aerobic conditions. The yield may be improved by the addition of an inhibitor, e.g. 2,21-bipyridine, pyrogallol, thymol, thiourea, sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and disodium and tetrasodium salts thereof, pentachlorophenol, potassium cyanide and sodium azide.
