To maintain constant the discharge rate of the face conveyer of a coal mining installation in which a mining machine is automatically moved to and fro along the conveyer at a rate when travelling in a direction opposite to the conveying direction of the conveyer faster than when moving in the other direction there is provided a control means for automatically reducing the speed of the machine when the machine is moving through the end part of its travel in the conveying direction of the conveyor.
