Abstract

1,122,254. Roll holder. SIGNODE CORP. 13 June 1966 [16 Nov., 1965], No. 26254/ 66. Heading A4G. [Also in Division B8] A carton for dispensing plastics strapping S from a coil includes a closed lower compartment holding the coil, and an upper open tray 31 separated from the lower compartment by a wall 58 in which a feed aperture 36 is provided. The tray 31 is divided by a fixed partition 60 which forms, with flaps 62 hinged thereto, a carrying handle, a finger space 34 being provided. The flaps 62 may be held in the vertical position shown by a flap 70, or may be folded down into a coplanar relationship across the top of the tray 31. A separate lid (14), Fig. 5 (not shown), may be provided to complete the closure of the tray, and this lid may be slid on to the base of the carton during use. The carton is preferably formed from a single paper-board blank in which the wall (58) Fig. 6 (not shown), of the tray is formed in two halves, each of which is connected to a side wall (22, 20) of the carton through panels (56) which lie against the inner surfaces of the side walls on erection. The partition (60) and flaps (62) are hinged to the halves of the wall (58), and the two sections of the partition (60) are provided with end flaps (76) to underlie panels (72) on the end walls (26, 24) on erection, the panels (72) folding in to form the inner end walls of the tray. Recesses (80) in the ends of each half of the wall (58) receive tabs (78) on the panels (72) to hold the carton erect, and staples may also be used. The base of the carton is formed from four flaps hinged to the lower ends of the side and end walls, the innermost of these flaps, (42), covering the entire base so that when the strapping S is pulled from the aperture 36, Fig. 2, the coil, mounted on a core which allows a small amount of lateral play within the carton, rotates easily within the closed compartment. The hole 36 is circular, and of slightly smaller diameter than the width of the strapping so that it is held in a friction grip when not being pulled.
