In a method for the continuous forming of a rod or strip of a plastic material, a wrapping strip e.g. of paper, is shaped to trough form, and plastic material in powder form is fed into the trough and heated to produce a viscous mass, the strip is then folded to enclose the material, and the deformable rod so produced is passed through plates and/or rollers to give the desired rod configuration. A band of paper is fed between upper and lower rollers and cut longitudinally into three strips 5, each provided with two lines of perforations 6, Fig. 3a. The strips are then fed between an upper roller and lower block and shaped into troughs 14, Fig. 3b, which pass below a vibrated hopper which fills them with powdered polyethylene, Fig. 3c. The fitted troughs pass to heating plates and then to a pair of forming plates, the upper one of which is triangularly grooved to produce rods 25, Fig. 3f, which are cooled and set. A pair of forming rollers may be used instead of, or in addition to, the forming plates. The rods may then be drawn through an adhesive bath, dried and reeled for storage; alternatively the wrapping strip may be removed after the final forming operation, and the rods cut to length.
