Abstract

[Also in Divisions E1 and G1] The axial vibrations of a drilling tool are measured by the voltage induced in a winding attached to the tool as it moves relative to a series of magnetic poles on the housing. As shown (Fig. 1), a hollow cylindrical body 1 is secured at 2 to the lower end of a set of rods and is coupled to a hollow rod 3 carrying the drilling tool 5 by matching grooves 7, 8 which produce positive rotational coupling but allow limited relative axial movement against springs 14 and limiting shoulders 12, 13. The space between body 1 and rod 3 is filled with a fluid whose pressure is made equal to that of the fluid in the hollow rod 3 by a bellows 29. The body 1 carries a magnet assembly 17 on its internal surface, consisting of a series of ring magnets (19, Fig. 2, not shown), with alternate polarity. The corresponding portion of the outer surface of the rod 3 carries a coil winding 22, in which a voltage is induced by the axial vibration of the tool 5 and rod 3 relative to the body 1 during rotation and drilling. This voltage may be fed to a measuring system, or to a low impedance load to act as a brake, or converted to D.C. or sinusoidal A.C. to energize other local measuring equipment, e.g. strain gauges.
