Heading G4H In a shaft-position encoder a sensing head 36, Fig. 16, including a permanent or electromagnet and either a field plate or a Hall plate generator, is moved axially past a coded pattern of high and low reluctance regions on a cylinder 35. The pattern can be produced either by ferro-magnetic material embedded in non-magnetic material, or by raised and lowered regions of ferro-magnetic material. The E sensing head could be E-shaped to provide a bipolar signal for each bit sensed. A variety of constructional methods are outlined.
