Abstract
1,199,593. Playback of magnetic records. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 11 March, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 25389/67. Heading G5R. Information magnetically recorded as alternate North and South poles is read by a head having a closed, saturable core 1 and subjected to a unidirectional magnetic bias field FB. The bias field is produced by a permanent or electromagnet M and may be adjustable. As described, the head has an interrogating winding 3, supplied with a pulsed, square wave or sinusoidal signal, and an output winding 4. The effect of the field FB is to reinforce the North (say) pole fields and to reduce the South pole fields (Fig. 4) to improve resolution and/or packing density.
