Abstract

1,121,570. Vehicle accessories &c. SHELLER MFG. CORP. 6 Oct., 1966 [28 July, 1966], No. 44741/66. Heading B7J. [Also in Division B5] Plastics steering-wheels having a @ wood finish are produced by (i) producing a model of natural wood, (ii) forming at least one metal shell therearound, the interior surface thereof having an inverted wood grain surface, (iii) using the shell in which to mould plastics material, (iv) removing the moulded wheel therefrom, trimming it and coating with a fluid finishing material. The plastics used preferably has a tensile strength of 2000-7800 psi, a Rockwell hardness of 10-122, an elongation of 2À8-100% and a compressive strength of 2100-22000 and is preferably cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate propionate, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene or a mixture thereof. The fluid finishing material is preferably a wood-coloured oil stain and may be further coated with a protective finishing material which cures at 70-140‹ F. e.g. a clear urethane or alkyd base coating. The metal shell may be formed using the arrangement of Fig. 2 (not shown) where wooden ring-halves (2, 4) are mounted on steel centering rings (6, 8) and the metal shell (10, 12) is formed thereon by plating e.g. with nickel or by forming a rubber member thereover, which is removed and ceramic cast therein, and the metal shell e.g. of hard tool steel is cast on the ceramic. The metal shell is then placed in a mould (Fig. 4) which comprises means to inject said plastics material into the cavity 58 via duct 54 (see also Fig. 5, not shown), upper and lower holding blocks (40, 42) movable relative to one another to enable removal of the moulded wheel, the metal shell being attached to at least one thereof e.g. by adhesive in grooves 44, 46.
