Abstract
The invention relates to a process for the production of an aromatic ether in which an aromatic compound having a replaceable halogen atom preferably chlorine or bromine atom as a nuclear substituent is reacted in the presence of oxygen with an alkali metal alcoholate containing 4 or more carbon atoms so that the halogen atom is replaced by an aliphaticoxy group preferably containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms inclusive, the quantity of the alkali metal alcoholate employed being at least 1.5 gram mole per gram atom of replaceable halogen in the aromatic compound. The aromatic compound preferably contains not more than one group which enhances the mobility of the halogen atom, e.g. nitro, cyano, carbonyl and sulphonyl groups and a halogen substituted benzene having a nitro group in an ortho- or para-position to a halogen atom is preferred. In an example, a solution of sodium n-heptoxide is added to a solution of 4-chloronitrobenzene in n-heptanol and air bubbled through and after fractionating 4-n-heptyl oxynitrobenzene is obtained.
