Abstract
The co-operating surfaces of the contacts of a vacuum switch are formed respectively of a silversilicon alloy and a silver-nickel alloy so that upon arcing between the contacts nickel silicides are formed as non-ductile films upon the surfaces of the contacts reducing the tendency to contact welding. The silver-silicon contact may be produced by melting together in vacuo 94-96% silver and 4-6% silicon, heated by R. F. induction using a molybdenum susceptor at 1050 DEG C. for 30 mins. The contact being cast and then machined. The silver-silicon contact may alternately be made by mixing 90% silver powder with 10% silicon powder, compacting under a pressure of 10 tons/in2 and sintering in vacuoat 790 DEG C. for 45 mins. The silver-nickel contact may be produced by compacting 5 micron nickel powder under 15 tons/in2 and sintering at 800 DEG C. for 20 mins. and then infiltrating the compact with silver by heating in a graphite crucible to 1050 DEG C. for 10 mins. The final contact containing between 65 and 85% nickel. In an alternative embodiment a high-purity, zone-refined copper contact co-operates with a high-purity, vacuum-outgassed titanium contact, non ductile films of copper-titanium compounds being formed during arcing.
