Abstract

1,121,359. Electrical musical instruments. J. C. COOKERLY, and G. R. HALL. 3 Nov., 1966, No. 49374/66. Heading G5J. The strings of a musical instrument are conductive and are arranged in a magnetic field, which they cut when vibrated, the current so generated in the strings being fed to an amplifier and speaker. In the electric guitar shown, the strings which may be phosphor-bronze, beryllium-copper or metallic wrapped nylon or gut, pass between the pole plates 34, 35 of a magnet. The strings are electrically connected together at one end by a bar 20, and have their other ends individually connected through amplifiers 25 to a speaker 26. An aluminium strip (27, Figs. 2 and 4, not shown) extends along the neck of the instrument and forms an electrical connection between the bar 20 and an earth line 28. The strip also propagates sound waves along the neck at a different speed to the material of the neck and has a damping effect on vibrations in the neck. The enlarged head 21 adds to this effect. The magnetic field is arranged to extend over a considerable length of the strings to eliminate harmonics. In a modification each string has an individual strip magnet formed of hard rubber or plastic impregnated with barium ferrite. In a further modification the strings are connected in series to a common amplifier.
