Abstract

1,121,322. " White noise " generator. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 20 Aug., 1965 [20 Aug., 1964], No. 34029/64. Heading G5J. In a siren a flow of compressed gas is modulated to produce a non-uniform sequence of pneumatic pulses, spaced, and with length selected, according to a mathematical code such that the output comprises a large number of harmonics of the fundamental recurrence frequency of the non-uniform sequence. The sound resulting has an energy level that is approximately the same over a wide range of frequencies, and may be employed to simulate the noise of jet engines. Modulation of the gas stream may be by irregularly placed slots or holes in a moving tape, preferably endless, or in a drum, disc or annulus, the slots being punched according to, for example, a linear recurring sequence code. Alternatively the emission of pulses may be controlled by a pneumatic jet amplifier, responding to a planned code stored in the form of a perforated tape or generated by a pneumatic shift register, or a valve controlled by an electronic shift register may be employed to pulse the gas stream.
