A combined thrust and journal bearing for a stepped rotary shaft 15 has a bush 12 mounted within a supporting body 10; a thrust-face 14 of the bush 12 is provided with cavities 16 which are supplied with pressurized-oil, via an annular chamber 21 formed by chamfering an inner peripheral edge of the bush 12, longitudinallyextending grooves 17, a circumferential-groove 30 formed on the internal periphery of the bush 12, a passage 20, a circumferential-groove 19 formed in the outer periphery of the bush 12 and a supply-passage 18 formed in the body 10. In a modification, a flange 13 is provided with a number of cavities 22 which are supplied with pressurized-oil via an annular chamber-defined by chamfering an internal peripheral edge of the body 10, a groove 31 formed on the outer periphery of the bush 12 and the circumferential-groove 19. The bush 12 may rotate at a reduced speed or may be fixed in the body 10.
